Hotel Review: La Frégate Hotel, St Peter Port, Guernsey

1.1K

La Frégate Hotel is a 4-star boutique hotel in St Peter Port, the capital of Guernsey. It’s hidden away in its own gardens and it’s easy to forget that you’re in the centre of a bustling town. Once a spacious mansion, dating back to the 18th century, rooms are split between the old building and a newer extension. Some have balconies or terraces on which to enjoy Guernsey’s stunning sunrises

You’ll get a warm welcome here, as service is key and it feels more like a private home than a hotel. Highly polished wooden bannisters adorn the main staircase and exposed ceiling beams add to the unique character of the place.

La Fregate

Each room is different, but all are furnished to a high level of luxury. The complimentary still and they replenish sparkling water bottles every day as are the teas and coffee capsules.

Who for

Singles, couples and business travellers who want to enjoy the nearby amenities of St Peter Port or use it as a tranquil base for exploring the rest of the island.

 Accommodation

There are just 22 rooms and the ones in the newer wing have balconies or terraces. We stayed in a room in the main building which was actually two spaces – there’s the spacious bedroom but also a lounge equipped with armchairs and sofa. The large windows gave us a panoramic view of the harbour, the sea beyond and the islands of Herm, Sark and Breqhou.

The bedroom contained a comfortable Queen Size bed with cotton sheets, down duvet and hypoallergenic pillows ensured a good night’s sleep. Even better the room was completely silent with no traffic noise, making for sweet dreams. A desk with power sockets make a good work space.

The bathroom contained sink, bath and shower plus luxury toiletries, plush towels and toilet. Complimentary bottled water, gowns, slippers are all standard and there’s a kettle and Nespresso machine for hot drinks.

Food and Drink

The bar serves a comprehensive selection wines and spirits including Guernsey’s very own gin. There’s also a sea view terrace to enjoy an aperitif, light lunch or just to relax and enjoy the sunshine.

The restaurant has one of the finest views in Guernsey overlooking the harbour and beyond. Head Chef Tony Leck chooses only the best seasonal and locally sourced produce for his imaginative menus. We enjoyed a seafood starter which included Guernsey Chancre Crabmeat, Scallop Ceviche and Tempura Herm Oyster. Main course was Skate Wing served off the bone. Dessert was treacle tart with frosted raspberries.

Breakfast has a buffet selection of fruit, pastries, ham and cheese with main course chosen from the menu. Options include kippers, eggs benedict and of course a full English.

 Facilities

There’s a choice of two private dining/meeting rooms, the Boardroom and the Orangery, catering for between 10 and 40 people. For larger events you can make exclusive use of the restaurant or the entire hotel. There’s free on-site parking, and spacious private grounds

How much

Prices at La Frégate start from £125.00 per person per night including breakfast.

CHECK AVAILABILITY

What’s nearby?

A walk down the private path through the gardens leads to St Peter Port’s main street with shops and bars. Guarding the harbour is the imposing Castle Cornet and there are seawater bathing pools nearby. Victor Hugo fans won’t want to miss Hauteville House, the place where he completed Les Misérables, just up from the seafront . The rest of the island is connected by a comprehensive bus network, all available to catch from station on the seafront.

 VERDICT:

Although there’s no pool or spa, you’ll feel comfortable relaxing here as you enjoy the wonderful sea views. And the food in the restaurant is some of the best on the island.
